Algerian wine
The climate in Northern Algeria, home to its winegrowing are, is unique. The vines bask in the sun, yet altitude ensures that they are protected against summer heat, with the sandy or limestone soil imparting a specific characer to the wine.
The French not only discovered in 1830, that Algeria is ideal for growing grape vines and making wine, but for tens of years also imported and planted their best varietals, selected manufacturing technologies and of course the craftsmanship of their winemakers. Algerian winemakers benefit from this history to this day, continuing their education in France.
Even the quality control system for Algerian wines is similar to the French one. It is based on regional appelations. Each wine is subjected to quality checks – only those wines, which fulfill the most stringent criteria receive an appelation guarantee (vins d´appelation d´origine garantie or VAOG).
