By imprinting a pair of lips on wine glasses, Sylvie Fleury has revealed by this artistic expression the very essence of the legendary wine, which creation is associated to Pierre Pérignon since 1668.

“Dom Pérignon is my favourite champagne”, she declares with a certain mischievious glint in her eye, just as Marilyn has often been know to say."

Dom Perignon Champagne

When Father Pierre Pérignon took over as cellar master at the Benedictine Abbey of Hautvillers in 1668, his avowed goal was “to make the best wine in the world”. For a young monk just 30 years old, it took a visionary spirit and exceptional audacity to set such lofty ambitions.  He succeeded in transforming the history of wine and is known today as the spiritual father of champagne.

It was not the first Champagne to use his name, as early in the last century small proprietaire-recoltants (farmer-growers) at Hautvillers, employed it for their wine. Unfortunately for them they did not register the name, Dom Perignon, as a trademark. Dom Perignon was born Pierre Perignon in 1640, the son of a clerk to the local judge at Saint-Menehould, a small town to the east of the Champagne region. At the age of 19 he entered the Benedictine Order at the Abbey of Saint-Vannes at Verdun. When he was just 28 he was appointed cellarmaster at the Abbey of Hautvillers.

Sometime around the late 1920's, Champagne Moët et Chandon adopted his name for their new luxury or prestige cuvée of Champagne. Helped in part by Hollywood glamour, this extremely well marketed brand has developed a widespread reputation in countries across the globe. In most vintages it has proved to be considerably above average in quality and is in huge demand. Its 1990 vintage is generally admired as an exceptional Champagne.

Today, the House of Dom Pérignon has perpetuated the visionary approach instilled by its founder, a vision that continues to express the essence of true luxury: continual reinvention of the exceptional.
This reinvention is what guides the inspiration of Dom Pérignon chef de cave Richard Geoffroy as he crafts each new Dom Pérignon vintage.

Champagne

Champagne is a sparkling wine produced by inducing the in-bottle secondary fermentation of wine to effect carbonation. It is produced exclusively within the Champagne region of France, from which it takes its name. While the term "champagne" is used by some makers of sparkling wine in other parts of the world, numerous countries limit the use of the term to only those wines that come from the Champagne appellation. In Europe, this principle is enshrined in the European Union by Protected Designation of Orig... read more »
