Using twenty-seven ingredients of herbs and spices the D.O.M. stands for Deo Optimo Maximo which means - To God most good, most great. Benedictine is a judicious blend of the recipes created by Dom Bernardo Vincelli and by Alexandre Le Grand. It is made up of 27 plants and spices which come from the four corners of the globe. Angelica, hyssop, juniper, myrrh, saffron, aloe, arnica, cinnamon…(the full list is a closely guarded secret!) give Benedictine its unique flavour. Benedictine has always been made with a unique savoir-faire and has a quality beyond reproach, thanks to its lengthy production process. It is distilled in copper stills and then aged in oak casks in the dark Palace cellars.

Benedictine D.O.M.

Close to its 500th birthday and produced at the Benedictine Monastery at Fecamp on the coast of Normandy, France since 1510. The monastery was destroyed during the French revolution and has since been produced by Alexandre le Grand.

Don Bernado Vincelli originally designed the 'elixir' to sustain the monks in their work, and as a probably useless defence against malaria, as they were close to large marshlands, and was the first branded liqueur medicine.

Medium to deep amber with a greenish-gold rim. Nose: Pronounced and complex nose offering a wealth of spice and fruit aromas. Cloves, cardamorn and liquorice mingle with honey, butterscotch, prune and orange. Palate: Pungent herbal and spicy flavours mingle with a pleasing balanced sweetness. It is intensely on the palate but displays real complexity.

Can you pls tell me if there is an expiry period for Benedictine DOM since it comprises a blend of herbs and plants? or is it like other liquors where the longer you keep, the better they become, or is it all a myth?? Thank you.

English Helpdesk, 12/05/2010
Hello Albert, there's no BBD on Benedictine and you should be able to enjoy also a fairly old bottle should you come across one. As a general rule of thumb, spirits and liquors keep maturing only while in barrel. Once they are bottled, there's no further improvement (nor deterioration).
